Good Friday

Reading

               Mark 14:32-15:47

The theme in Mark’s gospel of not being ready at the four watches of the night continues at the time of Jesus appearance before the council. The third watch of the night his cock crow and here we find Peter the last of the twelve denying and abandoning Jesus. The fourth and final watch of the night is morning and at the start of chapter fifteen Jesus is before the authorities the people who should identify the Messiah but are in denial.

In this gospel more than the others we see Jesus completely abandoned and alone ultimately on the cross he cries out quoting from Psalm 22 ‘my God my God why have you abandoned me’. This gospel makes us face the full pain and enormity of the event taking place. At the point of Jesus’ death, the temple curtain that separates the people from God tears in two and the separation is taken away by Jesus’ act of obedience.

In the creation story we are taken through six days of activity and a day of rest. In Mark’s passion story we have been taken through six days of activity now we wait for a new week.

Prayer

Loving God, may we live our lives as a true reflection of the love that comes from you. Amen.
